WHISPERS BENEATH THE DUST | Original Story

Whispers Beneath the Dust explodes off its surface, capturing the impression of the horse and its rider about to leap toward us, the viewers.

The loose brushstrokes, which both depict the rider and surround him, along with the recognizable - albeit obscured - form of our subject, create a haze from which this rider’s story emerges.

That’s something I’ve always loved about Josh’s western work. So often, he gives viewers enough of the subject to set the scene while leaving just the right amount of space for each person to construct their own narrative.

Where is this rider headed? Perhaps he is our story’s hero, caught in the midst of a long ride, tracking a group of notorious bandits. Or is he an outlaw, racing away from the scene of his most recent heist?

Maybe it’s even simpler than that. I imagine that our subject’s undefined features allow each of us to picture ourselves as this well-postured cowboy. The story is what we choose it to be, and, as great art so often does -Josh’s art especially - we are met right where we stand

This painting is for sale, and I am thrilled to help the right person bring it home. More than that, I would love to know how you read the story of this cowboy. When you look at the painting, do you imagine yourself in the rider’s shoes, or do you see something entirely different?

Best,
